Watch the punk rock goddess of preparedness, Susan Jekarl, push NFL legend Vencie Glenn of San Diego to his limits. Is he prepared for an earthquake? Can he GET prepared?
First of three parts up today!
Susan Jekarl evaluates Vencie’s house using our Earthquake Safety Checklist. First on her list, Vencie’s giant aquarium, which is not secured! His refrigerator and his cabinet doors aren’t secured either. Vencie’s got a lot of items to work on.
Vencie’s been in an earthquake before, but Susan takes him to the Big Shaker, an earthquake simulator where he experiences what a really big earthquake is going to feel like. After realizing how much a big earthquake could shake his home, he’s ready to make his house earthquake-ready. Remember in an earthquake, you need to Drop, Cover and Hold On! Don’t stand there looking silly!
Susan asks Vencie if he has earthquake insurance, but he’s just got renter’s insurance. Renters insurance doesn’t cover damage from earthquakes. Susan tells Vencie that for as little as $49 a year, he can get a policy that will cover his apartment and will also cover extra living expenses in case he needs to leave his apartment in the event of an earthquake.

As a Seismic Retrofit Contractor in NorCal we deal with unprepared homeowners all the time. Will Susan be covering retrofitting your home in future episodes? We have done several media spots in the past and are scheduled for another one in September on soft story structures (possibly apts like Vincie’s if it has tuck under parking) and steep hillside structures.
